The Zimbabwe Economic Freedom Fighters says it is appalled by the violence that was unleashed on police officers by some foreigners in Johannesburg on Thursday.
In a statement issued on Friday ZEFF said, "The Zimbabwe Economic Freedom Fighters strongly condemns the violence witnessed on the streets of Johannesburg CBD .We believe that violence against the law enforcement officers regardless of any justification is wrong and must be condemned in the strongest terms. We are particularly concerned that the opportunists who always seek to divide our people may take advantage of this situation to further their political agenda which has always been anti-immigrants."
ZEFF called upon the residents of Johannes burg to follow procedure when laying their grievances.
"We call upon all those affected to respect and co-operate with the law enforcement officers. Any grievances that emanate from these interactions should be addressed without resorting to violence. It is imperative that those who feel aggrieved by the state or the City of Johannesburg by-laws should approach relevant authorities to address their grievances peacefully and lawfully."
The party added that it is ready to assist affected residents from the immigrant communities.
"We as Zim EFF stand ready to work with members of our communities of immigrants to address some of the challenges that immigrants face in this country. We remain firmly resolute in our quest for economic emancipation of all African people in our lifetime . It is in this context that we strongly condemn violence because we believe that violence breeds violence . We must totally reject those within our communities who seek to divide us."
