The Zimbabwe Red Cross Society has launched a US$3,3 million water sanitation and hygiene project meant to benefit over 100 000 people in Masvingo's Chivi District.
The society says they had carried out feasibility studies of rural areas in need of assistance in the improvement of access to water and identified Chivi as one of the areas in need of urgent attention.
The Secretary General for the society, Mr. Lucky Goteka said an advance team is already in Chivi District to implement the project.
He also said they had launched the project in Harare for the convenience of their funding partners, adding that the money will be used to drill 50 boreholes.
It will also go towards rehabilitating 350 run down boreholes as well as the construction of 3 400 latrines.
The project launch coincided with the handover of utility vehicles and motor cycles to be used during the project.
The project seeks to improve the health and quality of life of vulnerable communities through increased access to safe water.
