Zimbabwe police officers off to UN peace-keeping mission

TWELVE Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) officers will next month leave the country for a United Nations Peace-keeping mission in Darfur.
Police Commissioner-General Godwin Matanga yesterday challenged the officers to be professional in executing their duties.
"To the departing contingent, as you set sail, bear in mind that we take pride in the fact that you are adding an indelible footprint to the Zimbabwe Republic Police's illustrious history in various United Nations, African Union and Sadc peacekeeping assignments across the globe," Comm Gen Matanga said.
"As you partake the arduous task ahead, always be mindful that the primary goal we are sending you to lands far away from your homes and families is to foster and sustain peace. The people of Sudan and Darfur in particular will be looking up to you to keep the peace more so as they endeavour to rebuild their nation.
"Always take pride in the knowledge that your selfless contributions to peace will be etched in world history and treasured by both current and future Sudanese generations," he said.
Comm Gen Matanga implored the departing officers to shun all forms of behaviour that soils the name of the country and also urged them to avoid social media abuse.
"It is also noteworthy for you to remember that your colleagues that have served in many other UN missions across the world before you set the bar high. For that reason, never for a moment should you lose sight of the fact that we have sent you to be ambassadors of the organisation and indeed of our beloved nation, Zimbabwe.
"It is incumbent upon each and every one of you to shun all forms of behaviour that might bring the ZRP and our country into disrepute. Let me also warn you against entangling yourselves in any conduct that frowns upon the very virtues and principles of our organisation and country.
"Avoid the temptation of indulging in excitable bouts such as abuse of social media and making disparaging comments about your organisation, country and the United Nations, always exhibit the highest standard of discipline and ethical conduct."
