A 24-year-old Rusape man died last week after excessively drinking the illicit kachasu brew in a bid to show his drinking partners that he was one of the best drunkards in the world.
Tongesai Ephraim Maruni was taking the brew with his friends when he decided to show them "how experts do it".
Manicaland province police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Luxson Chananda confirmed the tragic case of death by misadventure, saying Maruni died on his way to Makoni Clinic.
It is understood Maruni and his friends visited a local "brewing centre" which sells the highly toxic beverage. He then told his colleagues that he could imbibe many litres without getting drunk.
True to his word, it is said, he imbibed from morning to evening.
He became drunk after which he visited his uncle's home where he requested some food. He, however, became weak, prompting his uncle to rush him to the clinic. He, however, died before reaching the health facility.
"When he got to his uncle's place, Maruni asked for food, but, before the food was ready, he became so weak that his uncle and his wife decided to take him to the clinic," said Asst Insp Chananda.
The police spokesperson warned members of the public against taking illicit brews.
