The United States has pledged strong support for Zimbabwe following the national launch of lenacapavir (LEN), a groundbreaking HIV prevention tool, during a ceremony held in Epworth on Thursday. The event marked a significant milestone in decades of U.S.–Zimbabwe collaboration in the fight against HIV.

In a statement, the United States said it is providing lenacapavir — an American innovation developed by Gilead Sciences — signalling a new era in HIV prevention. Over the next three years, the U.S. plans to support 271,000 people and prevent more than 9,000 new infections through the rollout of LEN.

“These are not just numbers. These are Zimbabwean children, men and women saved who will be protected from HIV and will continue to pursue their dreams,” the statement read.

Speaking at the launch, U.S. Deputy Chief of Mission Phillip Nervig highlighted the significance of the breakthrough, describing LEN as a major step toward an HIV‑free generation.

“LEN represents the cutting edge of HIV prevention science. Already in use in the United States, as well as in Zambia and Eswatini, LEN offers Zimbabwe an historic opportunity to sustain its remarkable progress in controlling the HIV epidemic by reducing new HIV infections,” he said.

Administered twice a year, LEN provides a discreet and highly effective option for individuals facing adherence challenges, particularly young women, pregnant and breastfeeding mothers, and other high‑risk groups.

The United States remains the largest donor to Zimbabwe’s health sector. To date, American taxpayers have contributed more than US$1.9 billion to combat HIV/AIDS in Zimbabwe — support that has helped the country surpass the UNAIDS 95‑95‑95 targets.

According to the statement, U.S. assistance is evolving with a focus on results, accountability and long‑term sustainability. Through the America First Global Health Strategy, the United States aims to help countries achieve greater self‑reliance.

“Together, we can end HIV. I am confident that as the Government of Zimbabwe takes even more leadership, an AIDS‑free generation is within our reach,” Nervig said.
