The Home Affairs co-Minister, Kembo Mohadi told the state controlled ZBC News that President Robert Mugabe and Vice President Joice Mujuru had instructed him that his ministry, should take over the exhumations and reburial of all fallen heroes at Chibondo.
The ministry which administers the three Acts of birth and deaths, museums and monuments, burial, reburial and cremations, will be taking over from the Zimbabwe Fallen Heroes Trust that has been working at the site.
According the ZBC, Mohadi's ministry had previously said it was not involved in the exhumations but Mugabe has instructed that they take over.
Mohadi stated that President Mugabe had said the exhumed bodies must be decently reburied at Chibondo and a monument erected at the site.
Mugabe said this was in memory of those who were killed by the "white settler regime" during the country's armed struggle and buried in mine shafts.
He said experts such as pathologists should be involved in the exercise which will be funded by the ministry.
