Driver steals haulage truck
3 hrs ago | Views
A daring theft involving a 30-tonne haulage truck has left a local employer grappling with the loss of valuable property after his driver allegedly stole the vehicle last month. The truck, valued at US$47,795, is yet to be recovered, and police are continuing their search for the suspect.
Shepherd Kambarami, 40, from Murambinda Growth Point, was employed by Mr. Itai Madondo, a businessman based in Fairbridge Park, Mutare. Kambarami had been tasked with collecting timber from Nyanga Pine Estate in Mutasa on November 29, 2024, but instead of carrying out his duties, he drove away with the truck, a white Volvo 30-tonne vehicle with registration number ABN 2748 and trailer AFQ 2804.
According to Acting Manicaland Provincial Police Spokesperson Assistant Inspector Wiseman Chinyoka, Kambarami had arrived at the estate, but after seeing a long queue of other haulage trucks, he abruptly left the premises without notifying anyone or loading the timber.
"On December 7, 2024, Mr. Madondo received a call from Wattle Company management, asking about the truck's whereabouts. However, the truck was neither on the loading bay nor anywhere on the premises. Attempts to reach Kambarami were unsuccessful, leading Mr. Madondo to report the matter to Mutasa Police Station," Assistant Inspector Chinyoka explained.
The haulage truck's value was confirmed at US$47,795, and despite extensive efforts by authorities, the truck has not been recovered.
Kambarami now faces charges of theft of trust property and remains at large.
Meanwhile, police in Nyanga are investigating a separate armed robbery incident that occurred on December 6, in which five robbers brutally attacked a local businessman, stealing US$5,000, a vehicle, and several valuable household items. The victim, Mr. Edward Tsarwe, is currently recovering in stable condition at Nyanga District Hospital after sustaining head injuries during the attack.
According to Assistant Inspector Chinyoka, Mr. Tsarwe and his son, Shelton, were returning home from Sedze Business Centre when they were ambushed by five armed robbers. One robber, wielding a pistol, demanded cash from Shelton, while another tied him up. The robbers then forced their way into the house and, holding Mr. Tsarwe's wife at gunpoint, stole US$5,000 in cash, along with a 48-inch plasma television, two iPhones, and seven blankets. The robbers also made off with a Nissan X-trail vehicle.
The total value of the stolen items was estimated at US$10,000, and nothing has been recovered. Mr. Tsarwe's injuries, which included cuts to his head, were inflicted during the robbery.
Police have appealed to the public for any information that could lead to the arrest of the suspects. Anyone with details is encouraged to contact ZRP Nyanga or their nearest police station.
Assistant Inspector Chinyoka urged the community to assist in both investigations to help bring the criminals to justice and prevent further incidents.
