The government has announced plans to upgrade Avoca Rural Hospital in Insiza District, Matabeleland South, to improve healthcare service delivery. The upgrade will include constructing a new mortuary and recruiting a medical doctor, addressing critical needs in the community. This initiative is part of the Government's National Development Strategy (NDS1), which aims to enhance rural healthcare facilities.

Deputy Minister of Health and Child Care, Sleiman Timios Kwidini, highlighted to Parliament the significant infrastructure and medical staff shortages at Avoca Rural Hospital, including the absence of a theater, X-ray machine, and laboratory. The Ministry plans to build the mortuary in 2024, pending budget approval from the Treasury. Additionally, outreach clinics will be established at Avoca, Shangani, and Wanezi rural hospitals starting at the end of June 2024, with the deployment of medical doctors to these facilities.

Rural healthcare in Zimbabwe has faced challenges such as inadequate infrastructure, outdated facilities, and a lack of medical professionals. Many rural areas also lack basic services like clean water, sanitation, and electricity. To address these issues, the government is upgrading healthcare facilities, recruiting and training more healthcare workers, and implementing programs to improve access to healthcare, particularly in rural areas. The upgrades to Avoca Rural Hospital and the establishment of outreach clinics are key steps in these efforts.
