Zimbabwe's repository of mining rights has grown to more than 60,000 licences as the Government accelerates efforts to modernise the administration of mining titles through the rollout of the Mining Cadastre Management Information System.
The update was presented by Mines and Mining Development Minister Dr Polite Kambamura during a Cabinet meeting, where ministers reviewed progress on the implementation of the Mining Cadastral Registration System.
According to the post-Cabinet briefing, the Ministry of Mines and Mining Development now maintains a repository of more than 60,000 mining licences covering various categories of mineral rights.
"To date, the Ministry of Mines and Mining Development has a repository of over 60,000 licences, spanning from Blocks of Claims, Special Grants, Mining Leases, Exclusive Prospecting Orders and Sites, among other permits," the statement said.
Government said the Mining Cadastre Management Information System is expected to enhance transparency, efficiency and investor confidence by strengthening the governance of mining rights administration.
"The Mining Cadastre Management Information System will improve competitiveness in the mining industry to attract increased investment through strengthened governance in the administration of mining rights," the statement said.
Authorities said the digital platform would also address longstanding administrative challenges that have affected the mining sector, including overlapping mining claims and lengthy processing times.
"The computerised mining title platform will address technical challenges experienced, which include disputes from overlapping titles and processing delays," the statement said.
The Mining Cadastre Management Information System forms part of the Government's broader strategy to modernise mining administration, improve regulatory certainty and create a more transparent investment environment for one of Zimbabwe's most important economic sectors.
