INNOCENT Kaia produced a superb maiden Test century to put Zimbabwe in complete control of the one-off Test against Bangladesh as the hosts built a commanding first-innings lead at Harare Sports Club on Monday.

Kaia struck a magnificent 140 off 227 deliveries to anchor Zimbabwe's innings of 410 after the hosts resumed the second day in a strong position.

At stumps, Bangladesh were 33 for one in their second innings, still trailing Zimbabwe by 230 runs after being dismissed for just 140 in their first innings on Sunday.

Playing only his fifth Test innings, the 33-year-old right-hander surpassed his previous aggregate of 172 runs from four innings to register his maiden Test hundred.

His composed knock featured 17 boundaries before he was dismissed attempting a flick off left-arm spinner Taijul Islam, edging the ball to Shadman Islam at silly mid-off.

Kaia received valuable support from several teammates as Zimbabwe's batting line-up dominated the visitors.

Captain Craig Ervine contributed 60, Brian Bennett added 59, while Wessly Madhevere remained unbeaten on a fluent 77 to ensure Zimbabwe posted a formidable total.

Bangladesh briefly hoped Kaia's dismissal with Zimbabwe on 279 for four would trigger a collapse, but Madhevere frustrated the tourists with an accomplished innings that lasted 166 minutes and included eight boundaries.

Although Taijul Islam claimed impressive figures of seven wickets, the Bangladesh spinner conceded 138 runs as Zimbabwe's batters capitalised on favourable conditions.

Bangladesh made a cautious start to their second innings but lost one wicket before the close of play, leaving themselves with a daunting task to avoid defeat.

Zimbabwe are chasing only their second Test victory over Bangladesh, having shared honours in a two-match series played in Bangladesh last year, where each side won one match.

With a healthy lead and Bangladesh already under pressure, Zimbabwe will head into the third day firmly in control and well placed to push for victory.
