A bus driver was killed and at least 11 passengers injured after a repatriation bus carrying Malawian nationals overturned on the N1 highway near Musina, just four kilometres south of the Beitbridge Border Post, on Tuesday.

According to preliminary reports, the bus was travelling from KwaZulu-Natal to a repatriation camp in Musina when the crash occurred. Authorities suspect the driver may have lost control of the vehicle due to fatigue.

Emergency services responded to the scene and transported the injured passengers to Musina Hospital for treatment, while officials continued assessing the full extent of the accident.

The crash comes amid a growing movement of migrants leaving South Africa following weeks of anti-immigration unrest in several parts of the country.

Protests led by anti-immigration groups and vigilante movements have fuelled uncertainty among foreign nationals, with demonstrators demanding the removal of undocumented migrants and creating fears of violence in some communities.

The unrest has prompted thousands of migrants to seek voluntary repatriation to their home countries.

Zimbabwean authorities say they have already facilitated the return of more than 3,600 citizens through emergency repatriation measures introduced in response to the escalating tensions.

The Musina crash adds another challenge to the ongoing humanitarian operation, highlighting the risks faced by vulnerable migrants undertaking long road journeys as they leave South Africa and return to neighbouring countries.

Authorities are expected to investigate the exact cause of the accident.
