Businessman arrested in ritual killing saga

A businessman from Muzarabani, Josiah Hungwe (68), has been arrested for allegedly orchestrating a plot to kill a five-year-old boy for ritual purposes. The victim, Takunda Charumbuka, a pupil at Rosehill Junior School, narrowly escaped harm thanks to the swift intervention of his uncle and other villagers.
The harrowing incident occurred on November 19 at around 4 PM in Saraoga Village, under Chief Muzarabani. Provincial police spokesperson Sergeant Major Samuel Chikasha confirmed the arrest and detailed the sequence of events.
Takunda, an Early Childhood Development (ECD) A pupil, was walking home from school alone when he was approached by Richard Million, a vagrant. Million reportedly grabbed the boy from behind, threw him into a nearby stream, and carried him on his shoulders as he attempted to flee.
Takunda's uncle, Zhenaini Charumbuka, who was cycling behind the boy, witnessed the assault and raised the alarm. He pursued Million while shouting for help, drawing the attention of Milson Charumbuka, a villager, who joined in the chase.
The two managed to apprehend Million, who was handed over to police. During interrogation, Million claimed that Josiah Hungwe had hired him to kill the boy for ritual purposes to boost his business.
Hungwe, however, denied the allegations, stating that Million was mentally unstable but acknowledged that the suspect had previously worked for him.
Sergeant Major Chikasha said that Takunda did not sustain any visible injuries during the ordeal. He urged parents and guardians to prioritize the safety of children, especially those commuting to and from school alone.
"This incident highlights the need for parents and guardians to accompany their children to ensure their safety. Let us remain vigilant and report suspicious individuals in our communities," said Sergeant Major Chikasha.
The investigation into the case is ongoing, with Hungwe and Million in police custody as authorities work to verify the claims. The community has expressed outrage over the incident, calling for justice to be served swiftly.
