The Zimbabwean government, in partnership with the International Labour Organisation (ILO), the National Social Security Authority (NSSA), and the Embassy of Sweden, has launched the Decent Work Communication Campaign to promote safer, fairer, and more productive workplaces in the construction sector. The initiative is themed "Towards Vision 2030: Building a Safe, Inclusive and Economically Empowered Zimbabwe."

At the launch, ILO country office director Philile Masuku highlighted that the campaign represents a collective commitment to translate labour principles into tangible improvements on construction sites. She urged companies to strengthen safety measures, including proper induction training, routine safety briefings, and consistent use of protective equipment. Masuku also called for clear employment practices such as written contracts, fair wages, and social security registration to provide stability for workers and enhance enterprise performance.

The construction industry has long faced challenges, including underpayment and abuse of workers. Masuku emphasized that government action, guided by the Construction Contractors Bill of 2025, plays a critical role in improving compliance, conducting inspections, and aligning public procurement with good labour practices. She added that making compliance a factor in bidding for infrastructure projects can drive sector-wide improvements.

Clifford Matorera, chief director in the Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare Ministry, said the campaign aims to bridge gaps in occupational safety, labour rights awareness, and worker responsibilities. He stressed that safe practices, continuous learning, and respectful teamwork benefit both employees and employers, enhancing productivity and long-term sustainability.

The campaign calls for collaboration across the construction sector to embed decent work standards, thereby strengthening both safety and productivity in one of Zimbabwe's largest employment sectors.
