A deadly clash between touts representing rival bus operators, Inter Africa and Stallion Cruise, erupted in Chiredzi last week, culminating in the tragic death of one tout. The victim succumbed to his injuries upon admission to the hospital, prompting urgent intervention from local authorities.

In response, the Chiredzi Town Council and police convened a crisis meeting with stakeholders, resulting in a resolution to separate the two companies into distinct loading zones. The move is aimed at quelling tensions and ensuring passenger safety.

Chiredzi Town Council public relations officer, Ms. Kudzai Chimusoro, confirmed the decision, attributing it to growing concerns from commuters who have faced ongoing harassment.

"We resolved to separate the loading bays for the buses to protect passengers who were caught in the middle of these disputes," she said. "This measure is intended to de-escalate the situation and promote public safety. Stallion Cruise buses will now operate from the old rank, while Inter Africa will use the new rank."

The clash highlighted longstanding issues over control of passengers, with touts often forcing commuters to board specific buses regardless of personal preferences. These power struggles frequently turned violent, disrupting order at the ranks.

Chairman of the Chiredzi Transport Association, Mr. Fanuel Mapope, expressed optimism that the new arrangement would restore calm.

"Having both operators at one rank was a recipe for disaster," said Mr. Mapope. "After consulting stakeholders, including the Vehicle Inspection Department, the council, and the police, we agreed that separating the two operators was the best solution. This was finalized after the tragic death of a tout last week."

Passengers and residents are hopeful that the separation will bring much-needed peace and order to Chiredzi's bustling transport sector, ensuring safety for both commuters and transport operators.
