Gata pushes for anti-bullying laws in schools
2 hrs ago | Views
Mutema-Musikavanhu legislator Angeline Gata has raised serious concerns over the rising incidents of bullying in schools within her constituency. This follows ongoing research being conducted in collaboration with the Zimbabwe Pan African Researchers to better understand and address this critical issue.
Preliminary findings from the research indicate a significant surge in bullying cases among learners, prompting Gata to call for urgent action. As schools reopen tomorrow for the new academic year, Gata is intensifying efforts to raise awareness among parents, educators, and community members about the importance of vigilance against bullying.
"The safety of our children is paramount," Gata said during a community engagement session. "We must work together - parents, teachers, and community leaders - to cultivate an environment where respect and kindness prevail."
In her long-term vision, Gata is advocating for the creation of specific laws targeting bullying. She believes that existing regulations require reinforcement to ensure effective implementation.
"The introduction of new legislation is crucial in deterring bullying behavior and fostering a culture of respect among learners," Gata emphasized.
As part of her immediate strategy, Gata plans to continue visiting schools to engage with parents and raise awareness about preventive measures against bullying. She draws inspiration from President Emmerson Mnangagwa's initiatives, particularly the introduction of SI 2 of 2024, which focuses on the protection of children and young persons. This was subsequently legislated as an Act of Parliament, underscoring the government's commitment to child welfare and safety.
"We must cultivate an environment where Ubuntu/Hunhu are the norm for our learners," she said, reflecting on the values of a progressive Zimbabwe.
"As the new school year approaches, stakeholders are encouraged to remain vigilant and proactive in combating bullying, fostering a safe and nurturing educational environment for all students."
