A Sunday church service in central Harare descended into chaos when relatives of a university student stormed the pulpit and physically confronted the presiding pastor, accusing him of impregnating the young woman and then abandoning her.
Apostle Trust Zvikomborero Chakona, the leader of Grace Life Embassy, was delivering a sermon at a building along Robert Mugabe Road in the Harare CBD when he was attacked in full view of his congregation. His clothes were torn during the confrontation, which temporarily disrupted the service and attracted the attention of bystanders outside.
The explosive allegations stem from a relationship between Apostle Chakona and a university student identified only as Jean, who claims the pastor pressured her to abort the pregnancy and later severed all communication.
"He told me to abort, and when I refused, he started avoiding me and eventually blocked me," said Jean. "He then began accusing me of seducing him and demanding sex - those claims are not only false, they're insulting. If he is truly a man of God, why didn't he resist?"
Jean further stated that their relationship began in June last year, and at the time, she was unaware that Chakona was married. "He never mentioned a wife. He actually promised to marry me," she said.
Frustrated by failed attempts to get a meeting with Chakona, Jean's relatives decided to confront him publicly at his church.
In response, Apostle Chakona admitted to the affair but denied paternity of the child. He also claimed he was seduced.
"To be honest, that girl kept demanding to spend time with me and I eventually gave in," Chakona said. "Yes, I got married in December, but she pursued me even after that. The pregnancy may not be mine, but she's targeting me."
He described the incident as a calculated humiliation. "Her relatives beat me, tore my clothes, and insulted me in front of my church. They've even confronted my father and continue to threaten me," he added.
The dramatic confrontation has since gone viral on social media, sparking widespread debate about accountability, sexual ethics, and the abuse of power in faith-based institutions. Some congregants are reportedly demanding answers from church leadership, while others are defending the apostle, claiming he is being targeted.
Neither police nor church elders have publicly commented on whether disciplinary or legal action will follow. The incident has raised serious questions about leadership conduct within the church and the vulnerability of congregants in relationships marked by power imbalances.
