A 28-year-old truck driver from Budiriro 2 reportedly tried to commit suicide by throwing himself in front of a commuter train in Harare at around 8am in Harare yesterday.
Eyewitnesses said Trust Mwedzi jumped onto the tracks as the train approached.
His hand was cut off and he was late last night at Harare Central Hospital undergoing surgery.
The train was travelling from Mufakose to the city centre and the incident occurred near the entrance to a tobacco auction house. Mr Brian Dzvaka, a Darwendale farmer who says he witnessed the incident said, the train's horn blared twice, presumably to warn Mwedzi.
The train's cattle catcher reportedly pushed him off the tracks but his hand was then hit.
The train immediately stopped and people nearby rushed to assist.
Harare provincial police spokesperson Inspector James Sabau said, "A 28-year-old man dived in front of a commuter train in an attempt to commit suicide in the Lochinvar area.
"He slept on a railway line and a train came and cut off his hand.
"He also suffered body injuries and was admitted at Harare Central Hospital."
