Tonderai Chidawa, President of the Zimbabwe Youth Action Platform - a Zanu-PF-affiliated youth league - has declared that the party's agenda to extend President Emmerson Mnangagwa's rule to 2030 is underway, stating that "the window for different views on it has now closed."

The announcement comes ahead of Zanu-PF's annual conference in Mutare from 13-18 October, where delegates are expected to pass a resolution backing the party's earlier decision to support extending Mnangagwa's tenure beyond the 2028 constitutional limit.

Mnangagwa, however, has publicly rejected the 2030 plan. Speaking at a Zanu-PF Central Committee meeting in Harare, he reaffirmed that elections will proceed as scheduled in 2028 and vowed to step down at the end of his term, citing his commitment as a "constitutionalist."

Observers note a growing tension within the ruling party: while Mnangagwa maintains his public stance on the 2028 exit, his staunch allies continue to push the 2030 agenda, suggesting a complex mix of political maneuvering and internal lobbying within Zanu-PF ahead of the conference.
