PLUMTREE – A suspected rapist was arrested after allegedly leaving his mobile phone at the scene of the crime, leading to his swift identification and apprehension.

Elphas Dube (30) appeared before Plumtree magistrate Joshua Nembaware, where he was remanded in custody to 12 December.

Prosecutor Sheila Nyathi told the court that on 17 November, Dube went to the complainant’s house at night and found the 47‑year‑old woman sleeping outside. He reportedly questioned her, dragged her into the house and raped her before fleeing into the dark - leaving his mobile phone behind.

The following morning, the complainant discovered the phone and informed her uncle, who advised her to file a police report. The phone led investigators to Dube, resulting in his arrest.

The case continues.
