Residents of Masvingo City were left astonished on Wednesday midday when a lightning strike hit the top corner of a building along Simon Muzenda Street, dislodging bricks and striking a City Council wheel clamp below.
Witnesses said a traffic marshal had just clamped a car parked in front of the building when the bolt struck, sending two bricks tumbling. One of the bricks hit the wheel clamp directly, leaving onlookers both amazed and bemused.
The incident has sparked lively discussions among locals, with some joking about the car owner's "good luck" and others speculating on whether the event was purely natural or somehow providential. "Some thought it would hit a tree or something else, but never a clamp," one resident remarked.
This is not the first time Masvingo has been the scene of unusual lightning-related incidents. A few years ago, a magistrate famously fled a courtroom mid-hearing to seek shelter from a strike, leaving city residents bewildered. However, the dramatic targeting of a wheel clamp has captured the city's imagination, leaving many residents jokingly clamouring for the car owner's contact details "for future reference."
No injuries were reported, and the clamp was damaged but removed safely. The event has reinforced the city's reputation for unexpected and memorable lightning encounters.
