Former Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) founder Nelson Chamisa is not supporting the candidature of musician and comedian Mothusi Ndlovu, also known as Madlela Sikhobokhobo, in the upcoming Nkulumane by-election, a former Bulawayo provincial CCC spokesperson has said.
Swithern Chirowodza dismissed social media reports suggesting Chamisa's endorsement, cautioning residents against being misled.
"Nkulumane should not be hoodwinked by social media falsely claiming Nelson Chamisa is backing the candidature of Ndlovu aka Madlela Sikhobokhobo," Chirowodza said.
"Chamisa resigned from the CCC, now led by Sengezo Tshabangu, which aligns with President Emmerson Mnangagwa and the Zanu-PF Lacoste faction."
The by-election, scheduled for December 20, follows the death of Desire Moyo in a car accident on October 10. Nine candidates filed nomination papers on November 20 to contest the seat.
Among the contenders are Esther Auxillia Zitha, widow of the late MP, running as an independent; Ndlovu, fielded by Tshabangu's CCC; Ethel Sibanda of the MDC-T; Alson Moyo of EFF Zimbabwe; Rodney Donovan Jele, endorsed by former CCC members loyal to Chamisa; and Ibetshu LikaZulu secretary-general Mbuso Fuzwayo, also contesting as an independent. ZAPU is represented by Vivian Siziba, Zanu-PF by Freedom Murechu, and Nompilo Ncube Malala is standing for the Zimbabwe African National Congress.
CCC councillor Bruce Moyo, an ally of Chamisa, publicly endorsed Jele, urging Nkulumane residents to support him. "We must ensure Nkulumane is returned to its people and to its dignity. We cannot afford to have Zanu-PF and the 2030 enablers bully our people," Moyo said.
Jele, a former Ward 22 councillor, is considered one of the strongest candidates in the race, having enjoyed substantial support in parts of the constituency.
Tshabangu defended his party's choice of Ndlovu, noting the late Moyo was an artist and that his party sought to maintain continuity. He also criticised Zitha for entering the race soon after her husband's death, saying she should have allowed herself time to mourn.
The by-election campaign officially opens next week, with candidates expected to engage in door-to-door mobilisation in the opposition stronghold.
