The Zimbabwe National Road Administration (ZINARA) has announced that its e-tag cashless tolling system will be made available to every motorist in the country by next year, as part of efforts to modernise tollgates and reduce delays on major highways.
Speaking on Thursday at the Ntabazinduna Toll Plaza during a media tour organised by the transport ministry, ZINARA chairman George Manyaya said the system's adoption has exceeded expectations, with over 30,000 vehicles already registered since its launch in December 2024.
"We are looking forward to every car being registered by next year. Our aim is inclusivity; we want this system to be available and convenient for everyone," said Manyaya.
The Radio Frequency Identification (RFID)-based e-tag system processes vehicles through number plate recognition in under two seconds, allowing motorists to bypass queues via dedicated, unmanned express lanes.
ZINARA reports that the tolling technology has processed over 932,000 transactions this year and is operational at 25 of the 29 tollgates nationwide.
Manyaya noted that the initiative aligns with the ministry's broader strategy to improve travel efficiency, enhance road safety, and harmonise with regional transport trends.
Currently, the system serves private motorists, public transport operators, and commercial fleets in logistics and mining, with payments made through prepaid cards or linked accounts such as the Frequent Traveller's Express Pass.
ZINARA is also engaging stakeholders to ensure accessibility, affordability, and user education accompany the nationwide rollout, especially ahead of the traditional year-end surge in traffic, which often causes gridlock and increases accident risk at toll points.
