A sombre atmosphere has engulfed Chishakwe Village in Mutare after a 22-year-old self-proclaimed prophet, Takudzwa Muchadya, allegedly took his own life following rejection from his girlfriend. The tragedy has left villagers in shock, with police urging communities to seek help when faced with emotional distress.
According to Acting Manicaland provincial police spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Wiseman Chinyoka, Muchadya is believed to have struggled emotionally after the end of his relationship. He is said to have attempted to reconcile with the young woman on several occasions, but she refused to resume the affair.
The incident occurred on December 2 at the Kashiri homestead, where Muchadya had been staying while visiting his uncle, Obey Matope. During his stay, he met the girlfriend, and the two began a relationship. However, when the woman later left for Harare to take up employment, Muchadya reportedly failed to come to terms with the separation.
When she returned to the village in late November, Muchadya made another attempt to mend their relationship but was once again turned down. Police say this rejection may have triggered the fatal decision.
"Towards the end of November, the girlfriend returned to her rural home, and Muchadya again tried to persuade her to rekindle the relationship, but she flatly refused. As a result of her unyielding stance, Muchadya took his own life," said Assistant Inspector Chinyoka.
Muchadya's body was later discovered hanging from a Muzhanje tree at the Kashiri homestead. The matter was reported to ZRP Chitakatira Base, and his body was conveyed to Victoria Chitepo Provincial Hospital for post-mortem.
Police have since urged members of the public to seek counselling, communicate openly about their challenges, and seek support rather than resorting to irreversible actions. Those experiencing emotional distress are encouraged to confide in family, community leaders, church counsellors, social workers, or health professionals.
If you or someone you know may be struggling with suicidal thoughts, please seek help immediately through local mental health services or community support structures. No situation is permanent, and help is available.
