A viral claim circulating across WhatsApp and other social media platforms suggesting that the Zimbabwe Energy Regulatory Authority (ZERA) is preparing to introduce a US$100 monthly solar tax has been dismissed as false.

The message, which has spread widely in recent days, alleges that the regulator intends to impose the fee on households with solar systems following ongoing consultations with energy sector stakeholders. The claim caused concern among domestic solar users at a time when many Zimbabweans are turning to alternative energy due to persistent power shortages.

However, ZERA has categorically denied the report, describing the circulating article as false and malicious. In an official statement, the energy regulator assured the nation that there are no plans to levy solar users or charge a monthly fee for domestic installations. The authority said the information being shared online is misleading and does not reflect any current or future policy direction.

"There is no levy or charge required or will be required to install or own a solar system for domestic use," ZERA said.

The clarification is expected to calm fears among homeowners who have increasingly invested in renewable energy systems to reduce reliance on the national grid. The regulator urged the public to rely only on official communication channels and to verify information before sharing it further.

The rumour highlights the growing challenge of misinformation on social media, especially regarding issues with national economic impact. For now, ZERA has made it clear that no monthly solar tax exists, and no such proposal is under consideration.
