President Emmerson Mnangagwa has personally contributed $400,000 to support the Zimbabwe Warriors ahead of this month's Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco, Sports Minister Anselem Sanyatwe announced at the team's send-off dinner on Monday evening.
The donation, drawn directly from the President's personal funds rather than government resources, is earmarked for the welfare and support of the national team during the tournament. Addressing the players, government officials, business figures, and football stakeholders present, Sanyatwe praised the President's commitment to supporting Zimbabwean athletes.
"His Excellency has always assured that our athletes are supported, and that our national teams, not only soccer, operate within an environment that encourages excellence," Sanyatwe said. "Let me proudly inform you that the President of the Republic of Zimbabwe injected a total of $400,000 from his office, and not fiscus, for the welfare of our Warriors during AFCON. And on that note, basing from my background as a military general, failure is not an option."
While the Minister highlighted Mnangagwa's personal contribution, he did not disclose the government's financial support for the team through the national budget.
The Warriors are heading to Morocco with hopes of progressing to the knockout stages of the continental showcase for the first time in history. They will face a tough group stage lineup, competing against Egypt, South Africa, and Angola, and will kick off their campaign against the Pharaohs of Egypt on December 22.
