A Class B inmate, Jeffrey Jingura, has escaped from Harare Central Prison, the Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services (ZPCS) confirmed.
According to ZPCS, Jingura, who was convicted of theft, escaped on December 20, 2025, using a motor vehicle he had been repairing at the prison workshop.
ZPCS National Public Relations Officer, Assistant Commissioner Meya Khanyezi, said investigations are ongoing to determine the circumstances surrounding the escape and noted that the matter has been reported to the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP).
"ZPCS remains committed to maintaining a secure correctional environment and to the rehabilitation of inmates. While incidents of this nature are regrettable, they are rare, and we continue to strengthen our security measures to prevent such occurrences in the future," Assistant Commissioner Khanyezi said.
She urged the public to assist with information regarding the escape. "We call on the public to remain vigilant and to report any information that may assist in the recapture of the inmate. Rest assured, we are working tirelessly to resolve this matter and to uphold the safety and security of our communities. Members of the public are advised to exercise caution and vigilance. Do not approach the individual if sighted. Instead, please immediately contact the nearest police station or the ZPCS emergency line on 0242 706501," she added.
This incident follows another high-profile escape in March 2025, when inmate Luke Zinyengerere staged a dramatic getaway from officers at Harare Magistrate's Court. Zinyengerere hijacked a vehicle after pointing a gun at escorting officers but was eventually recaptured and sentenced to 22 years for escaping lawful custody and carjacking.
ZPCS continues to emphasise its commitment to security and rehabilitation while urging the public to remain alert.
