Tensions have erupted in Murinye following an incident in which Chief Murinye reportedly used his truck to block access to Riverton Academy Extension, a new boarding school in the area built by businessman Philimon Mutangiri.

According to eyewitnesses, the chief ordered parents to take their children back home, declaring that the school would not open as scheduled because Mutangiri had allegedly failed to seek his permission before construction.

Mutangiri, however, dismissed the claims, telling Masvingo Mirror that he had gone above and beyond to support the chief, including connecting electricity to the chief's homestead and purchasing a $7,000 transformer.

He added that Chief Murinye is demanding a formal agreement stipulating that all of his children would attend the school for free. It is understood that the chief has multiple wives.

The standoff has sparked public debate about customary authority, land use, and private investment in the area, with local residents and parents caught in the middle as the school's planned opening is disrupted.

No official comment has been received from the local government or the chief's office regarding the matter.
