Highlanders Football Club has confirmed the appointment of former Manchester City and Zimbabwe Warriors striker Benjani Mwaruwari as its new head coach, marking a major step in the Bulawayo giants' efforts to rebuild and restore competitiveness.
In a statement released by the club, Highlanders said the appointment followed a "splendid recommendation" from its principal sponsor, businessman Wicknell Chivayo, who has also undertaken to pay Mwaruwari's salary.
The club expressed gratitude to Chivayo for his continued financial and strategic support during the 2025 season, describing his role as instrumental in shaping the club's future direction.
"The club acknowledges the splendid recommendation you made for the club to engage Mr Benjani Mwaruwari in a capacity to strengthen the club, given his technical experience in the game," Highlanders said.
Highlanders revealed that negotiations with Mwaruwari had been ongoing for some time, focusing on how the former Europe-based striker could contribute to improving the club both on and off the field. Those talks have now culminated in an agreement that sees him take charge of the first team.
"Consequently, the club and Mr Mwaruwari have come to an agreement that will see him take up the role of Head Coach. We believe his expertise will help steer the club in the right direction in terms of performance and excellence," the statement read.
The club said Mwaruwari's mandate will go beyond match-day tactics, with a strong emphasis on playing philosophy, youth development and player development pathways, areas Highlanders believe are critical for long-term success.
"This we believe is the vision our all-weather sponsor had," the club said, adding that it is optimistic about the direction the team will take under Mwaruwari's guidance ahead of the upcoming season.
Highlanders also appealed for continued support from Chivayo and the wider football community as the club embarks on what it hopes will be a successful new chapter.
"We look forward to you supporting Mr Mwaruwari and, consequently, the club as we look to a successful coming season," the statement said.
In addition, the club paid tribute to its curator, Mr J. Nkomo, for playing a key role throughout the negotiation process.
"We greatly value his input and wisdom in helping us steer the club in a positive direction," Highlanders said.
Mwaruwari, one of Zimbabwe's most decorated football exports, enjoyed a distinguished playing career in Europe and has in recent years been transitioning into coaching. His appointment has already generated excitement among Bosso supporters, who are hopeful that his experience and stature will translate into improved performances on the pitch.
