The Engineering Council of Zimbabwe (ECZ) has issued a stern public warning after discovering that some individuals are unlawfully using the professional designation of "Engineer," a title reserved for registered and qualified practitioners in the country.

In a notice released this week, ECZ emphasised that the use of the title "Engineer" is strictly regulated under the Engineering Council Act [Chapter 27:22]. According to Part VI, Section 33(1) of the Act, no person other than a registered engineer may hold themselves out as an engineer, use the designation or initials of a registered engineer, or use any title, description, or letters that imply such registration, whether in advertisements, documents, or other communications.

Section 33(3) of the Act stipulates that anyone found in breach of these provisions, or who knowingly employs someone in breach of the law, may be liable to a fine not exceeding Level Eight, imprisonment for up to one year, or both.

The Council cited a recent incident in which Laston Machengo of Roy Eno Solar Tech appeared in a viral video presenting himself as an "Engineer," a move described by ECZ as a "flagrant violation of the law." The Council confirmed that it is now proceeding to lay charges against Machengo in accordance with statutory provisions governing engineering practice in Zimbabwe.

"Let this serve as a warning to those who attempt to circumvent the law. Misrepresenting one's professional status is a serious offence, and violators will be brought to book," the notice stated.

ECZ urged the public to remain vigilant and verify the credentials of anyone offering engineering services, reinforcing that registration and compliance with the law are mandatory for all practitioners in the profession.

The Council's move underscores its commitment to protecting the integrity of the engineering profession in Zimbabwe and ensuring that only qualified individuals provide engineering services to the public.
