Chief Menyezwa, born Meluleki Gumede of the Dongamuzi area in Lupane, Matabeleland North, has written to the director of the Ministry of Local Government, seeking urgent intervention over a road severely damaged by recent heavy rains.

In a letter dated January 29, Chief Menyezwa said the road, which he uses to travel from Bulawayo to Lupane district and to his homestead, was washed away during heavy downpours on January 22. He indicated that efforts to engage Kusile Rural District Council (RDC) and the District Development Coordinator (DDC) had yielded no response.

"I have informed the Lupane DDC, the Ministry of Transport, and Kusile RDC by sending pictures to the DDC, who is aware of the damage. To my surprise, none of them has attended the scene up to now," Chief Menyezwa wrote.

He noted that the road is a vital route for more than 1,000 households across Dongamuzi Ward 1, from Lubimbi in Binga to Lusuku, and emphasised that it had not been maintained for 15 years. He requested the Local Government director to grant him permission to escalate the matter to the Office of the President if no action is taken.

As of the time of writing, the director had not responded to the chief's plea. Rural roads across Zimbabwe continue to suffer from chronic neglect, with most in a dilapidated state. In 2021, President Emmerson Mnangagwa declared the country's roads a state of national disaster, highlighting the ongoing infrastructure challenges facing rural communities.
