A 65-year-old local pilot, David Huntley-Walker, survived a solo crash landing at Kazungula Airstrip (MJ Air) on Monday morning.
Huntley-Walker, an experienced aviator, was the sole occupant of a private fixed-wing charter aircraft when the incident occurred. The yellow aircraft, registration Z-PWW, is based in Chinhoyi and had been flying from Deka Airstrip in Hwange en route to Kazungula.
Upon arrival at the scene, this reporter found the aircraft overturned and resting on its roof. Critical components had been covered to protect them from rain, while the surrounding area was cordoned off as authorities secured the site.
The pilot's son, David Huntley Jnr, who was present at the airstrip, confirmed that his father sustained only minor leg injuries. He said the aircraft overturned as Huntley-Walker attempted to brake during landing.
Huntley-Walker was taken to a local hospital, where he is receiving medical attention. No other injuries were reported.
The cause of the incident is yet to be formally established.
