Airbnb operators in Zimbabwe face deadline to register

Operators of Airbnb and other tourism-related businesses in Zimbabwe have been given until February 28, 2026, to register with the Zimbabwe Tourism Authority (ZTA) or face closure, as the authority ramps up compliance enforcement nationwide.

The ultimatum applies not only to Airbnb hosts but to all unregistered tourism facilities and businesses, including accommodation providers, restaurants, fast-food outlets, vehicle-hire companies, visitor attractions such as game parks and art galleries, and providers of recreational activities.

ZTA, now under new CEO George Manyaya, stated that a nationwide compliance blitz will commence on March 1, with law enforcement agents assisting in inspections across all ten provinces.

"In terms of Section 36 of the Tourism Act (Chapter 14:20), registration with the Zimbabwe Tourism Authority is mandatory and a statutory requirement," the ZTA said in a statement.

"Failure to register will result in the closure of unregistered facilities. The public is strongly discouraged from using unregistered tourism facilities and is encouraged to report any facility operating without a valid registration."

The authority stressed that the government has already reduced licence and registration fees across various categories to make compliance easier, improve competitiveness, and foster a sustainable tourism sector.

In November 2025, licensing and hotel registration fees were cut by up to 50% or more. For example, hotel registration fees dropped from as high as US$250,000 to a maximum of US$20,000, while annual licences for one- to five-star hotels now range from US$200 to US$2,000. Guest houses and lodges pay between US$200 and US$300 depending on star rating.

These reforms also aim to simplify regulatory processes, positioning the ZTA as the primary regulator while reducing duplicate local authority permits and fees, such as for boats. Authorities said the measures are designed to encourage formalisation, improve investment prospects, and boost the competitiveness of Zimbabwe's tourism industry.

Operators who fail to meet the February 28 deadline risk enforcement action, including the closure of their businesses once inspections begin on March 1.

The public is urged to verify the registration status of tourism businesses before use and report any unregistered operators to the ZTA.
