A 47‑year‑old Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Service (ZPCS) officer stationed at Plumtree has appeared in court after he allegedly facilitated the escape of a convicted rapist.

Yusufu Yusufu was brought before Plumtree magistrate Joshua Nembaware facing charges of aiding an inmate’s escape. He was granted US$100 bail.

According to the State, led by prosecutor Sheila Nyathi, the incident occurred last year when inmate Cabangani Mathe—who was serving a 20‑year sentence for rape—escaped from Plumtree Prison where Yusufu was stationed.

The court heard that Yusufu and Mathe allegedly conspired to engineer the escape. Yusufu is accused of supplying Mathe with two hacksaw blades and instructing him to cut through the burglar bars of his holding cell window.

Mathe reportedly carried out the plan over five days, cutting through three bars while disguising the activity as routine cleaning of the cell.

On 15 November last year, between 1am and 2am, Mathe successfully escaped after completing the cutting of the bars. He left the hacksaw blades and the severed metal pieces inside the cell.

The matter is still before the courts.
