Former Premier Soccer League secretary general Leslie Gwindi, who wanted the downfall of Highlanders Football Club in the late 90s and early 2000s, has reportedly ascended to the chieftainship throne as Chief Hwata in Muzarabani district.

Gwindi, who previously served in the same role at Dynamos and was also a former spokesperson for the Harare City Council, has yet to be officially installed by the Government in accordance with the Traditional Leaders Act.

Gwindi did not provide a comment when approached about the development. Writing on his Facebook page, former Chronicle journalist Fanuel Viriri noted that Gwindi is understood to have assumed the chieftainship last year. According to Viriri, Gwindi declined to discuss the matter, citing the authority of his clan's elders.

"Just wait, you need to talk to the elders first. I have no power to say anything. I will give you the scoop. Remember, I am not the PSL secretary general where I use football statutes to talk," Gwindi reportedly told Viriri.

The Chieftainship is hereditary within the Gwindi clan, and it is now his turn to assume the throne. Historical records indicate that Shayachimwe Mukombami was the first Chief Hwata, ruling from 1775 to 1820.
