Chief Murinye, born Ephias Munodawafa, was yesterday summoned to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) Law and Order section in Masvingo following an extortion complaint filed by prominent businessman Philemon Mutangiri.
Police recorded a warned and cautioned statement from the traditional leader as part of ongoing investigations.
The allegations are that Chief Murinye demanded that Mutangiri install electricity at his homestead and enrol his children at Murinye Riverton Academy free of charge.
One of Murinye's lawyers, Tatenda Nyoka of Chihambakwe Law Chambers, confirmed the development.
"Yes, I can confirm that Chief Murinye has been summoned by police after he was reported by Mutangiri. Police have recorded a warned and cautioned statement from him," said Nyoka.
"He was summoned to give a statement and has not been formally charged. Investigations are still underway, and he will be called back once they are finalised."
Nyoka, who is representing Murinye together with Knowledge Mabvure, said the matter followed an earlier report made by the chief against Mutangiri.
According to Nyoka, Murinye alleges that he was assaulted by Mutangiri during an altercation on the opening day of Murinye Riverton Academy. He said investigations into the alleged assault are also ongoing.
Masvingo provincial police spokesperson Kudakwashe Dewa was not immediately available for comment at the time of publication.
Both matters remain under police investigation.
