Chinhoyi Municipality has a new Deputy Mayor following the election of Zanu-PF councillor Magrene Chidarikire. She replaces CCC councillor Chipo Mlotshwa, who was expelled from council after being arrested for fraud.
Cllr Chidarikire, a Proportional Representation Zanu-PF representative, won the position with 12 votes, defeating Ward 11 councillor Voster Mashevedzanwa who secured 8 votes. She is the daughter of Faber Chidarikire, former Chinhoyi executive mayor and Mashonaland West provincial governor.
In her acceptance speech, Cllr Chidarikire emphasised her commitment to service, transparency, and accountability. "I accept this responsibility with full awareness that leadership is not about titles, but about service," she said. "It is about delivering results to the residents who expect better roads, reliable water, clean streets, sound financial management, and transparent governance."
She highlighted the need to restore public confidence and ensure that council resolutions were not just recorded but implemented effectively. Cllr Chidarikire also called on youths and girls to actively participate in governance, stressing that leadership is earned through courage, preparation, and commitment.
"When women rise into leadership, communities benefit from inclusive, balanced, and decisive governance," she added. Her election comes as Chinhoyi Municipality continues to grapple with governance gaps, revenue leakages, service delivery concerns, and trust deficits.
Cllr Chidarikire's appointment signals a renewed focus on accountability and community engagement in the local government.
