Police yesterday moved to prevent a press conference organised by the National Democratic Working Group (NDWG) in Bulawayo, raising concerns over the narrowing democratic space in the country.

The NDWG, led by veteran opposition activist Job Sikhala, opposes the proposed constitutional amendments that could extend President Emmerson Mnangagwa's tenure and alter the nation's political and governance structures.

The press briefing had been scheduled for 1pm at Samaritans in Bulawayo but was blocked by a heavy police presence, preventing the group from addressing the media.

NDWG condemned the move, calling it an act of political repression and a violation of citizens' constitutional rights. The group said the disruption underscores a growing trend of shrinking civic and political space in Zimbabwe.

The incident follows reports that officials from the National Constitutional Assembly (NCA), including its leader and law professor Lovemore Madhuku, were assaulted by state security agents during a meeting at their Harare offices earlier this week, leaving several with serious injuries.

NDWG reiterated its commitment to opposing the constitutional amendments and called on authorities to respect citizens' rights to assembly and free expression.
