A Harare maid who masterminded a robbery that cost her employer more than US$80 000 has been jailed for 36 months.

The Harare Magistrates’ Court convicted Sarah Matemarunda (59) of theft involving large sums of money stolen from her employer. Two months of the sentence were suspended, leaving her to serve 34 months.

The court heard that on 10 August 2025, the complainant left home for his farm in Darwendale, leaving Matemarunda and gardener Milton Mudimu on duty. The following day, Matemarunda phoned her employer claiming the gardener had not reported for work.

When the complainant returned on 12 August, he found his bedroom doors open and a digital metal safe forcibly removed from the wall. The safe contained US$80 400, ZAR4 000, 300 Yuan, 200 Dirhams, 100 Rupees and £30.

Police later found the safe inside a parked car at the property, with identifiable fingerprints. Further investigations led to the arrest of Mudimu, who was intercepted while attempting to flee to South Africa.

Mudimu implicated Matemarunda as the mastermind who provided information about the cash and coordinated with two male accomplices, who are still at large, to remove the safe and share the proceeds.

Matemarunda was arrested, leading to the recovery of US$1 239, ZAR1 360, 100 Yuan, 5 Dirhams, 50 Rupees and £10 hidden in her room.

Authorities have reminded the public that those who violate the trust of their employers and engage in criminal activities will face the full wrath of the law.
