CAPS United storm into early title lead

CAPS United will head into the international break as the early pace-setters in the 2026 Castle Lager Premier Soccer League season after winning their opening four matches in emphatic fashion.

The impressive run has drawn comparisons with the club's iconic 2004 title-winning campaign, when Makepekepe surged out of the blocks en route to championship glory.

After years of inconsistency, CAPS United are not only grinding out results but sending a strong warning to the rest of the league that they could be serious contenders this season.

Their four-match winning streak has propelled the Green Machine into pole position, built on a well-balanced squad blending youthful energy with experience and tactical discipline.

Their latest outing - a composed 2-0 victory over newcomers Hardrock - further underlined their growing confidence and control, marking their best start to a league campaign in 22 years.

Head coach Takesure Chiragwi, a key figure in the club's golden generation that won back-to-back titles in 2004 and 2005, is now spearheading a promising new era from the technical bench.

Despite the perfect start, Chiragwi has urged caution.

"We enjoy the moment and move on; it is only the start of the season. We have seen many clubs start well but fall by the wayside, so we need to be extra careful and continue to work hard," he said.

Historically, the current run surpasses their starts in both the 2005 and 2016 title-winning seasons, highlighting the scale of their early dominance.

The resurgence has been driven by attacking sharpness and midfield stability, with Ishmael Wadi leading the line effectively, Bret Amidu providing creativity, and Richard Hachiro adding steel and composure in midfield.

Elsewhere, defending champions Scottland are beginning to find rhythm, climbing to second place after a convincing 3-0 win over FC Hunters.

Traditional giants Dynamos are also showing signs of resurgence, sitting on eight points alongside former champions Simba Bhora and Ngezi Platinum Stars, keeping the pressure firmly on the early leaders.

While CAPS United have set the early tempo, the title race remains wide open, with several clubs capable of mounting a sustained challenge.
