A 25-year-old Bulawayo man has been fined US$120 after assaulting the mother of his child when she refused to allow him access to their son.
Phakamani Nkomazana, of Old Pumula suburb, appeared before Western Commonage magistrate Jeconia Prince Ncube facing a charge of physical abuse.
He pleaded guilty and was fined US$120 or, in default of payment, two months' imprisonment. The court ordered that the fine be paid by April 27.
Prosecutor Tafara Dzimbanhete told the court that Nkomazana and the complainant, Nozithelo Moyo (19), were previously in a relationship and share a child.
On February 13, 2026, at around 10am, Nkomazana reportedly went to Moyo's residence intending to take their son. However, when she refused, an argument ensued.
The court heard that Nkomazana became enraged and assaulted Moyo, striking her several times in the face with his fists.
Following the incident, Moyo sought medical attention and reported the matter to the police, leading to Nkomazana's arrest and subsequent prosecution.
The case highlights ongoing concerns around domestic disputes escalating into violence, with authorities continuing to urge peaceful resolution of conflicts, particularly where children are involved.
