Local multi-millionaire businessman Wicknell Chivayo, a close associate of President Emmerson Mnangagwa, has rejected claims by his estranged wife Sonja Madzikanda, saying their union was an unregistered customary law marriage and therefore provides no legal grounds for spousal maintenance or division of assets.
Madzikanda had filed a High Court claim seeking a staggering US$25 million settlement, including US$40,000 monthly spousal maintenance, US$1 million annually for holidays, and full coverage of their two children's education, medical care, and welfare. She also laid claim to several high-end properties in Gletwyn, Ballantyne Park, and a luxury apartment in Sandton, Johannesburg, along with a fleet of seven luxury vehicles - including three Rolls-Royces, a Mercedes-Benz Maybach, a Range Rover, and a Lexus SUV - and a private jet.
Through his lawyers at Mpofu Mazhata Chambers, Chivayo described the claims as "frivolous and vexatious," emphasizing that Madzikanda is neither the owner nor entitled to any of the assets, many of which are held in a family trust for their children.
Chivayo posted on social media:
"Please also be REMINDED that there can be NO DIVORCE where there was NO MARRIAGE at law… I NEVER bought that jet for you… everything I have belongs to my CHILDREN and you happen to be their Mother."
On child support, Chivayo stated he had deposited US$2.2 million in a savings account for the children and reaffirmed his commitment to their welfare, while rejecting maintenance for Madzikanda, whom he claimed left the union voluntarily under poor advice from friends.
He added:
"The same person who ANNOUNCED on social media that she wanted NOTHING to do with me is now the SAME PERSON trying to create the impression that I am CHASING AFTER HER… Bad advice from BAD FRIENDS can destroy even the last bit of good judgment."
The legal battle is ongoing, with Madzikanda pursuing claims both in Zimbabwe and South Africa, while Chivayo maintains that the dispute has no legal merit.
