A Bikita man has been sentenced to life imprisonment after being found guilty of killing his 62-year-old mother in a shocking act of violence that has shaken the Masvingo community.
Wonder Vurande of Mazungunye Village was convicted of murdering his mother, Mervis Dinha, following a High Court ruling delivered by Justice Christopher Dube-Banda, who described him as "beyond societal redemption."
The court heard that the fatal incident occurred on May 28, 2025, after a domestic dispute escalated between mother and son. Mervis reportedly fled the home in fear after an argument, but was pursued by her son, who was armed with an axe.
Witnesses told the court that the victim cried out for help, warning neighbours that her son intended to kill her. She was chased through the village and into nearby bushland, where she was fatally attacked.
A post-mortem conducted by Dr Godfrey Zimbwa revealed that she suffered severe head injuries and a fractured neck, consistent with a violent assault.
During the trial, Vurande claimed his mother had fallen from a cliff, but the court rejected his version, describing it as false and inconsistent with evidence, including bloodied clothing and the recovery of a broken axe handle at the scene.
Justice Dube-Banda condemned the act in strong terms, stating that the accused was "a cruel man who deserves to be removed permanently from society," adding that the sentence was necessary to reflect the gravity of the crime.
The judge also placed the case within the broader context of gender-based violence, warning that femicide remains a serious national concern.
"Femicide remains a scourge ravaging our country to its core," he said, emphasising that women must be safe even within their own families.
The court ultimately imposed life imprisonment, saying the punishment served both justice for the victim and a broader message that violence against women will not be tolerated.
The case has sparked renewed calls for stronger action against domestic violence and greater protection for vulnerable women in communities across Zimbabwe.
