Prominent lawyer Thabani Mpofu has strongly rejected allegations linking him to a US$20 million scheme to support constitutional amendments, challenging journalist Reason Wafawarova to provide proof.

The claims were made in a Facebook post by Wafawarova, also known as Rizz Wafa, who alleged that Mpofu was part of a "Matebeleland Cabal" working to provide legal backing for Emmerson Mnangagwa's purported Agenda 2030.

Wafawarova named several individuals - including Canaan Dube, Jonathan Moyo, Mbuso Fuzwayo, Nqobani Sithole and Method Ndlovu - alleging they had collectively received US$20 million to "sanitise" the constitutional amendment push.

In a response posted on X, Mpofu dismissed the allegations as false and baseless, and demanded that Wafawarova substantiate his claims.

"In the interests of robust engagement and scrutiny, Mr Wafawarova must be encouraged to produce his evidence," Mpofu said.

"He will obviously fail to do so because he is lying, and thereafter I will proceed against him."

Mpofu said the allegations were not only untrue but also factually incorrect, including claims about his regional background.

"Everything that Mr Wafawarova has said about me is not only false but also inane. This goes even for basic facts like my place of origin. I'm from the Midlands," he said.

He further distanced himself from any alleged involvement, stating that he had not been directly briefed by Canaan Dube in years and had no connection to any legal work related to extending presidential term limits.

"The allegation that I was briefed to handle this term limit nonsense is therefore not only false but could not have been responsibly made by any journalist interested in telling the truth," Mpofu said.

The lawyer also emphasised his opposition to the alleged 2030 agenda, saying he has consistently resisted any efforts to extend presidential terms.

"I have put my life on the line in my fight against 2030. I fight on the frontline, and I fight with everything that I've got," he said.

Mpofu warned that he would take further action if the allegations are not substantiated, maintaining that he would defend his reputation while continuing his stance against what he described as unconstitutional political manoeuvres.
