A mother and her five children were killed on the spot yesterday after their vehicle collided head-on with a haulage truck along the Masvingo–Harare Highway, marking a tragic start to the Easter holidays.
The woman was reportedly driving a Toyota Corolla from Harare towards Zvishavane with her children on board when the accident occurred.
According to Paul Nyathi, national police spokesperson for the Zimbabwe Republic Police, the crash happened at the 246-kilometre peg along the highway.
"All six people who were in the Toyota Corolla vehicle (mother and her five children) died on the spot and their bodies were taken to Masvingo Provincial Teaching Hospital Mortuary for post-mortem," said Commissioner Nyathi.
Police said the names of the deceased will be released once their next of kin have been notified.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the driver lost control of the vehicle, causing it to veer into the opposite lane, where it collided head-on with the oncoming haulage truck.
Authorities have urged motorists to exercise caution on the roads during the busy Easter holiday period.
