Zion Christian Church (ZCC) leader Bishop Nehemiah Mutendi has defended his acceptance of gifts and donations from businessman Wicknell Chivayo, saying criticism over the matter is misplaced.
Speaking at the 2026 Annual Easter Conference held at Mbungo City of Peace in Masvingo, Mutendi addressed President Emmerson Mnangagwa, who was present at the event, and said he would continue to welcome support from Chivayo as well as other local businesspeople.
Mutendi has in recent years received substantial donations from Chivayo, including cash and luxury vehicles reportedly worth millions of US dollars. These include a Mercedes-Benz Maybach valued at around US$450,000, a US$2 million donation to the church, a Range Rover Autobiography SV worth about US$400,000, and a Toyota Land Cruiser 300 Series reportedly given to his wife. In 2024, Chivayo also donated US$1 million to the church.
Chivayo, a businessman whose wealth has attracted public scrutiny and ongoing investigations by the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC), has made multiple high-profile donations to religious organisations and individuals in recent years.
Defending the practice, Mutendi dismissed concerns that the funds were "dirty money," questioning what he described as selective criticism of foreign aid and international donations while local giving is viewed differently.
He also indicated that the church intends to formally engage the President regarding its upcoming university project, as part of broader fundraising efforts targeting local business figures.
Chivayo, who is also known for close associations with political and religious leaders, has continued to make large donations to various churches and institutions across Zimbabwe.
