Highlanders F.C. have suspended chief executive officer Denzil Mnkandla over alleged financial mismanagement linked to the club's recent tour of Botswana, amid growing scrutiny of senior officials.
Mnkandla, who joined the club last year from FC Platinum and became Highlanders' third CEO in 12 months, is accused of failing to follow procurement procedures, allegedly resulting in the club overpaying by at least US$20,000.
He was verbally informed of his suspension by club chairman Kenneth Mhlophe on Tuesday, with a formal written notice expected to follow, according to reports. The move is intended to allow for investigations into the six-day off-season trip.
The controversy has also placed pressure on Mhlophe and the club's board member for finance, Nkani Khoza, who reportedly approved the expenditures.
At the centre of the allegations are claims that Mnkandla did not obtain the required three quotations from service providers before committing the club to expenses, including accommodation arrangements.
Efforts to obtain comment from both Mhlophe and Mnkandla were unsuccessful at the time of publication.
Mnkandla took over from former CEO Brian Busani Moyo, who was dismissed after being implicated in inflating transfer fees for two players in a scheme involving an official from Bulawayo Chiefs F.C.. Moyo was later prosecuted and received a suspended sentence.
His predecessor, Sihlangu Dlodlo, had also only served briefly before his death at his home, marking a period of instability in the club's executive leadership.
