Grief continues to engulf Zimbabwe following another tragic road accident that claimed the lives of four members of a Bulawayo family, just days after a separate crash killed six members of the Mujuru family during the Easter holidays.
Tumelo Dube (33), a lance corporal attached to the Presidential Guard, died alongside his wife, Antonate Sibonginkosi Mashava Dube, and their two young children, eight-year-old Itumele and one-year-old Lorisana. The accident occurred along the Harare–Bulawayo Road, about 10km after Shangani, as the family travelled from Harare to Bulawayo. The children later succumbed to injuries in hospital.
The tragedy comes amid heightened concern over road safety, with the Zimbabwe Republic Police reporting 30 fatalities during the Easter holiday period, despite a drop in overall accidents.
A military funeral parade was held in Bulawayo in honour of Lance Corporal Dube at the State House Presidential Barracks, recognising his service in the Zimbabwe National Army. Chief mourner Tongai Hove described him as a disciplined and loyal soldier.
Dube, born in 1993 in Gwanda, joined the army in 2012 and served in multiple units before being assigned to the Presidential Guard's VIP Close Security Unit as a driver. He was awarded honours including the Independence Medal and the 10 Years' Service Medal.
Family members suspect the crash may have involved a hit-and-run, citing vehicle debris found some distance from the scene. Local villagers were the first to respond, but three occupants had already died, while one child later passed away in hospital.
Relatives described Dube as a responsible and humble family man who was in the process of building a home for his family.
The four will be laid to rest at their ancestral home in rural Gwanda, as the nation continues to grapple with the devastating impact of recurring road accidents.
