A student from the National University of Science and Technology has been selected as Zimbabwe's sole representative at the 4th BRICS+ Youth Innovation Summit 2026, marking a significant milestone for the country's emerging tech and geospatial innovation sector.

The student, Thabani Singwango, will present a project titled "The National Mineral Intelligence Hub and Academy," which applies Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Artificial Intelligence to modernise mineral exploration and resource management.

Singwango's project falls under the summit's Artificial Intelligence and Digitisation track and aims to improve how geological data is analysed to support more efficient and sustainable mining practices. The innovation is positioned as a tool that could strengthen Zimbabwe's mineral-rich economy through data-driven exploration.

The summit will be held on 9–10 April 2026 at the Tshwane University of Technology in Pretoria, South Africa, and is organised by the South African BRICS Youth Association (SABYA).

Singwango was selected from a competitive pool of applicants across the BRICS+ and Global South network, making him the only Zimbabwean delegate at the event.

He said the opportunity represents both a personal achievement and a national responsibility, emphasising the importance of showing that Zimbabwean youth are active contributors to global technological advancement.

The summit will bring together diplomats, policymakers and youth innovators, including figures such as Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma and other senior BRICS representatives. Participants will present solutions aimed at addressing global development challenges through innovation and technology.

Singwango's participation highlights growing recognition of research emerging from Zimbabwean institutions, particularly in geospatial science, which is increasingly central to the Fourth Industrial Revolution.

The presentation is expected to focus on building partnerships and scaling the proposed Mineral Intelligence Hub to support sustainable development across Zimbabwe and the broader BRICS+ region.
