A 32-year-old man from Dangamvura has been sentenced to an effective seven years in prison after being convicted of stealing vehicles in Mozambique and smuggling them into Zimbabwe for resale.
Dickson Nyamura was sentenced by Mutare provincial magistrate Poterai Gwezhira to 10 years behind bars, with three years suspended on condition of good behaviour.
The court dismissed Nyamura's defence that he had been given the vehicles by a relative in Mozambique to sell on his behalf.
Prosecutor Joyce Tinarwo told the court that Nyamura stole three vehicles in separate incidents in Manica province, Mozambique, during November and December 2025. He allegedly used duplicate keys before smuggling the cars into Zimbabwe through the illegal Burma Valley crossing.
The stolen vehicles—a red Honda Fit valued at US$2,000, a Toyota Hiace worth US$4,000 and another Honda Fit valued at US$3,500—were all recovered in Mutare and positively identified by their owners.
The case highlights ongoing concerns over cross-border vehicle theft syndicates operating between Mozambique and Zimbabwe.
