The case of a 42-year-old Zimbabwean truck driver accused of smuggling explosives worth more than R700,000 into South Africa has been postponed to April 30 by the Musina Magistrate's Court.

Edgar Maroto briefly appeared in court facing charges of illegal possession of explosives but abandoned his initial bid for bail, opting to remain in custody as proceedings continue.

According to National Prosecuting Authority of South Africa spokesperson Mashudu Malabi, Maroto was arrested on April 10, 2026, while allegedly attempting to enter South Africa through the Beitbridge border post.

"It is alleged that the accused had a false compartment in his truck where he hid the explosives. Upon searching the vehicle, customs officials discovered 3,990 blasting cartridges, 48 fuse connectors and 10 reels," Malabi said.

Authorities say the arrest followed an intelligence-driven operation involving the South African Revenue Service, the Limpopo Serious Organised Crime Investigation unit, the Border Management Authority and the South African Police Service in Musina.

Maroto allegedly attempted to evade arrest before being apprehended. A subsequent search of the truck uncovered explosives, including blasting cartridges, connector capsules and detonator fuses, with an estimated value of approximately R769,000.

The truck used in the alleged offence was also seized, bringing the total value of confiscated items to around R2.7 million.

South African authorities believe the explosives were destined for use in illegal mining operations in provinces such as the Free State and Gauteng, as well as in criminal activities including ATM and cash-in-transit bombings.

The matter has been postponed to allow for transfer to the regional court, with Maroto remaining in custody pending further proceedings.
